Smoky BBQ Ribs
You don't need a barbecue to make these meltingly tender smoky BBQ ribs. You can cook them in your oven and they taste fantastic.

Hasselback Potatoes
Hasselback potatoes are a clever combination of baked and roast potatoes. They were invented in 1953 at teh Hasselbacken Restaurant in Stockholm. Thank you Sweden!

RECIPE
Coleslaw Salad
Shop-bought coleslaw can be bland and insipid, but this recipe is packed with flavour and crunch. And it's even better if you make your own mayonnaise!

RECIPE
Chicken Schnitzel
A schnitzel, or escalope, is simply a very thin slice of meat coated in breadcrumbs and fried. The meat can be pretty much anything you fancy, as long as it's like a boneless steak. Chicken, turkey, veal or pork are all suitable.

RECIPE
Upside Down Pineapple Cake
This recipe first appeared in the US in the middle of the last century, probably spurred on by the ready availability of pineapple in cans. It's a spendidly weird combination that just works.

RECIPE
Bread Pudding
Versions of bread pudding can be found all over the world. After all, everybody has bread and everybody needs things to do with the leftovers. Bread pudding is not the same as bread and butter pudding - that's slices of bread baked in an egg custard. Bread pudding has more of a cakey texture. There's a couple of similar variations in the UK - Nelson Cake (after the town in Lancashire), and the Wet Nelly from Liverpool.

Sourdough Pizzas | Pepperoni Pizza | Ham Mushroom and Mascarpone Pizza
Hands up who doesn't like pizza! Pizzas are everywhere these days, but have you ever thought of making your own? It's quite easy to do and this recipe uses sourdough starter for a really tasty crust.

RECIPE
Minced Beef Cobbler with Cheesy Scones
The origins of cobblers are unclear, but it is certainly an old idea. Scones (some say dumplings but I think they are wrong) are placed on top of a stewed fruit or meat filling and baked. I guess you might call it a primitive pie. Adding cheese to the scones gives them a whole extra flavour dimension. I think we'll call it oo-marm-ee.

RECIPE
Strawberries and Cream with a Twist
Like, and possibly thanks to, Wimbledon, strawberries and cream are more or less synonymous with summer in Britain. The first few weeks of July, strawberries are in season and Wimbledon sells almost 200,000 portions during the tournament.

RECIPE
Clotted Cream
If you've ever had a cream tea with a scone, some jam and some clotted cream, you'll know what a heavenly thing clotted cream is. Unfortunately it's not always easy to get hold of, but if you can buy cream, you can make your own. It's really easy, but takes a bit of time.

RECIPE
Eggs Benedict with Easy Hollandaise Sauce
If you've never had eggs Benedict, you're missing a treat. Toasted English muffins topped with bacon, ham or smoked salmon, then a poached egg with a runny yolk, and all smothered in smooth and luscious Hollandaise sauce. Poached eggs can be tricky but there are plenty of gadgets to help you make them. Hollandaise, though, is a job for experts. Or, try this easy blender version.

RECIPE
Pork & Stilton Pie
Try these alternatives to the traditional pork pie. Instead of a pastry lid, use some sliced Stilton, or a layer of sage and onion stuffing. Or both - I've tried that and it is amazing. If you're not a blue cheese fan, ordinary cheese will work almost as well.

Caramelized Onion and Cheese Tart
This tasty tart is brilliant on a warm summer's day with a nice fresh salad. And it's vegetarian too.

Moussaka Stuffed Aubergines | Filled Eggplants
I'd be the first to proclaim my general dislike of aubergines (eggplants). Despite their fabulously alluring glossy purple skin, the inside manages to be an unpleasant, difficuly-to-cook, slimy mess. But, stuff it with minced lamb or beef, top it with bechamel sauce and golden bubbling cheese and it's transformed into something completely delicious. While I'm not claiming any kind of autheticity, this dish is similar to the Greek dish melitzanes papoutsakia - aubergine little shoes.

RECIPE
Minestrone Soup
If you had to name one soup from Italy, minestrone would be it. A richly-flavoured collection of beans and vegetables in a tomatoey base, minestrone soup makes a wonderful, filling and nutritious lunch or supper. And it's very easy to make.

RECIPE
Macaroni Pie
These pies are very popular in Scotland. Basically, you take a hard pastry shell (as used in Scotch pies), fill it with macaroni cheese and bake it. Pure, unadulterated comfort food.
