British Christmas Dinner and all the trimmings
Making a British Christmas Dinner, roast turkey and all the trimmings, can be a challenge. It's something you might only do once a year, and likely for a lot more people than you normally cook for. To make it easier, plan ahead and do as much prep as you can the day before. And don't give yourself too much work to do - I think three vegetables and two type of potato is more than enough. Good luck and don't panic!

RECIPE
Turducken - Three-bird Roast
I've always shied away from trying a 'turducken', a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken, and all stuffed with stuffing. Speaking as the inventor of the domestic long egg, it seemed gimmicky to me.

Apple Pie
As American as apple pie? Well no, not really. In fact apple pie originated in England as early as 1390. Apples aren't native to North America and were brought by the first settlers. But we'll let it go - apple pie is a tasty dessert wherever it comes from. Except fast food joints.

Nargisi Kofta Indian Scotch Egg
It is said that nargisi kofta was the inspiration for the invention of the scotch egg by Fortnum and Mason in 1738. The Indian version is a boiled egg wrapped in minced meat and frequently served in a curry sauce. The koftas aren't coated in breadcrumbs. The name comes from the nargis flower (narcissus) because its yellow trumpet and white petals look like a sliced open boiled egg.

Chicken Gyros, Tzatziki and Pita Bread
In a restaurant or takeaway, the meat for a gyro would be cooked on a vertical rotisserie, like a döner kebab. But you can still make a very convincing version of gyros at home without that. And you must make the tzatziki using the Greek method shown here - it's nothing short of brilliant!

RECIPE
Cornflake Tart
Cornflake tart was a very popular dessert served in UK schools during the 70s and 80s. It's very cheap to make, packed with sugar and not exactly the healthiest thing on the planet. But it's delicious, especially with instant custard.

Butter Chicken - Murgh Makhani
Butter chicken originated in Delhi in the 50s, and is definitely not a dish for the calorie conscious. Extravagant amounts of butter and cream are combined with tandoori-style chicken in a mildly spiced tomato sauce to create a luxurious dish of murgh makhani.

Omelette Arnold Bennett
Omelette Arnold Bennett originated in the 1930s when the writer stayed at the Savoy Hotel in London and requested something with eggs and fish for his breakfast. The kitchen put together this beast of an omelette, with smoked haddock, bechamel sauce and cheese. It is absolutely delicious.

Tartiflette | Potato Cheese and Bacon Casserole
Tartiflette comes from the Savoy region of the French Alps. It's a warming casserole of potatoes, cheese and bacon. The particular cheese that should be used is Reblochon, and actually tartiflette was made popular in the 1980s by a promotional campaign for reblochon. But if you can't get that particular cheese, there are numerous alternatives: you need a soft cheese with a white mould/rind that's sold in small rounds - camembert is probably the most accessible.

Union Jack Victoria Sponge Cake
I made my version of the official amaretti and lemon trifle a few weeks ago. It was challenging, so I thought I'd try to come up with something cheaper and easier. My cake is in the shape of one quarter of a Union Jack and it's based on a classic Victoria Sponge. In the end, I don't think it was cheaper or easier, but it's certainly tasty.

Lentil Soup
There's a lot of food poverty in the UK these days and I made a video of this recipe in response to an MP's suggestion that you can make nourishing meal for 30 pence. That's a ludicrous and insulting suggestion, but with this very simple recipe I did manage to get close - 36p per portion including 2 slices of bread and spread. Leaving aside the cost aspect, it's a delicious soup and very easy to make.
