Airfryer Chicken Nuggets

Introduction & method

Chicken nuggets were invented in 1950 but popularised by McDonald's in 1983. They have had a bad reputation for containing some awful stuff but these easy airfryer chicken are just chicken breast coated in seasoned breadcrumbs.

Airfryer Chicken Nuggets Recipe

Prep the Chicken


Trim off any fat from the chicken breasts and cut them into discs about 2½cm (an inch) diameter and 1cm (just under half an inch) thick.

Season the Breadcrumbs


Panko or homemade coarse breadcrumbs are best for this. Place them in a bowl, add all the seasoning ingredients and mix well.

Coat the Chicken


Place the flour on a small plate, the beaten egg in a bowl beside it, and the breadcrumbs in another bowl. With your left hand, place a chicken piece in the flour and get it coated all over. Put it in the egg and use your right hand to coat it completely, then pop it in the breadcrumbs and use your left hand to cover it in crumbs. Working like this you will have one dry hand and one wet one and you'll avoid getting huge clumps of breadcrumbs stuck to your fingers.

Cook the Nuggets


Heat your airfryer or fan/convection oven to 180°C (356°F), that's 200°C (392°F) for a conventional oven, gas 6. Place the nuggets in a single layer on a baking sheet and spray generously with oil. Cook for 10 minutes then turn them over, spray again and cook for another 10 minutes.

Make the Honey Mustard Dip


While the nuggets are cooking, mix all of the dip ingredients together.

 1 beaten egg

 4 tbsp coarse breadcrumbs
 quarter tsp salt
 half a tsp celery salt
 half a tsp white pepper
 half a tsp smoked paprika
HONEY MUSTARD DIP
 1 tbsp mayonnaise
 1 tbsp honey
 2 tsp mustard
 1 tsp lemon juice

Spray oil for airfrying.
